Year-End Fandom Meme, Stolen From ldybastet

Your main fandom of the year?

There wasn't any one fandom that completely dominated the year - if I had to say just one, it would be SCREW because of the lives I went to, but I also devoted a lot of listening, watching and writing time to GazettE and D=OUT, and the last month of the year was pretty much eaten up by Lycaon. Plus, there was considerable watching time and fandom lurking devoted to Sailor Moon Crystal and (at least at the beginning of the year) My Little Pony.

Your favorite film watched this year?

Malificent - which acually surprised me. I was expecting Sleeping Beauty turned into a xerox copy of Wicked, but the movie actually does a great job of creating a believable character with an understandable need for vengeance. (It's not compatible at all with the original movie, story-wise, but hey). I SO wanted my favorite movie of the year to be Godzilla, by the way - but that was impossible since you only saw the big guy for a total of about FIVE FLIPPIN' MINUTES. (I don't care about some family drama, I want to see kaiju stomping the crap out of each other!)

Your favorite book read this year?

John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood by Michael Sellers. It's the story of how a cult sci-fi novel series, which could have been a Lord of the Rings-type movie franchise, turned into a complete and total cinematic fiasco. It's pretty fascinating watching the phail happen - especially the incompetence of the marketing team, who sold themselves to Disney as new media gurus and yet had NO clue about social media. (It's pretty much a case study in how NOT to build a movie franchise).

Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?

Psycho Monsters. I loved the album even before I saw the SCREW lives, but it has special meaning for me now. I catch myself doing the furi if nobody's around when I'm listening to it (usually when I'm walking). Honors for singles go to D=OUT's Kanden 18 Go and Lycaon's Shadow.

Your favorite TV show of the year?

Sailor Moon Crystal. Sailor Moon was my very first Japanese fandom (unless you count watching dubbed Speed Racer when I was a kid) and I was thrilled to see it come back in a more-faithful-to-the-manga adaptation. It hasn't let me down, either - it's been gorgeous, wonderfully voice-acted and a lot more mature than the original. Plus, it's been a lot kinder to the male characters - Mamoru is treated as a full-blooded person and not a punching bag for the villains, and the Shitennou have their manga identities as Prince Endymion's former soldiers, which was dealt with well. (The end of their arc was NOT dealt with well, but you can't have everything).

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Lycaon. I would never have known about them unless I had been dragged to one of their CD release events when I was in Japan, since up until now, I haven't paid much attention to non-PSC bands. But this was a big, fat case of "Where has this band been all my life?" Not only do they have Yuuki, who is hotter than a firecracker in July and plays the porn sar better than most porn stars, they are actually a GOOD band - some of their work is very reminiscent of mid-period GazettE, and it's going to be interesting to see where they evolve from here.

Your biggest fadom disappointment of the year?

Minase leaving D=OUT (before I got a chance to see them live!), Rui leaving SCREW (he was never my favorite member, but he added a LOT to the live shows, and he will be missed), and a lot of fangirl behavior in general. I'd say the worst was the way the Sailor Moon fandom greeted Crystal - almost instantly, they were nitpicking the animation, yelling about small story changes and treating any and all instances of heterosexual romance as "THE WORST THING EVER OMG!111!!!!1!!!" They were even clogging confession communities with declarations that they had "LOST ALL RESPECT FOR USAGI" since she's a "DAMSEL IN DISTRESS NOW" because Mamoru bailed her out of a jam ONCE. (Did they miss her doing a giant Moon Healing Escalation from freaking SPACE? Or her repeatedly saving HIS butt?) Come on, people, we've waited nearly a freaking decade for this reboot and THIS is what you're going to do to it? (Not to mention the  Crystal-bashers kept saying the '90s anime was SO MUCH BETTER - did they forget about the super-boy-crazy Senshi, frequently questionable animation even by '90s standards and piles and piles of victim of the week/monster of the week filler episodes?) Dishonorable mention goes to the GazettE fandom for Swastikagate, which was blown way, WAY out of proportion to the point where it became embarassing for the fandom as a whole.

Your fandom boyfriend of the year?

Byou gets the nod on this one. (Hey, the man literally said "I love you" to me at a handshake event! Okay, I knew he meant it more like "I appreciate you being an international fan," but still!)

Fandom girlfriend of the year?

N/A in a romantic context since I don't swing that way - but if I were to choose a "haging out" female friend? I am really liking the way Crystal is portraying Minako. She is a strong leader who occasionally turns into a dork ("Do I look suspicious lugging this huge broadsword through Tokyo?"). Come to think of it, she's more than a little reminiscent of Kai.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

Oh, my God, THE SCREW LIVES. They were everything I could have hoped for and more. I'll neveer forget how it felt the first time I saw them walk out on that stage, and suddenly, they were three-dimensional, living, breathing beings - not images on a computer screen. And then, going to the handshake events and actually getting to talk to them (well, as much as I could with the language barrier) and hold their hands . . . words cannot describe. I hope everyone reading this someday gets the opportunity to see a band they love in Japan and go to one of their events (if the band in quesiton does that sort of thing) - it's an experience you won't ever forget.

The most missed of your old fandoms?

Alice Nine. I want the Alice Nine I knew and loved to come back - and I know they will, once they get the legal red tape with PSC straightened out. In fact, I suspect that being away from the mothership will be a creatively liberating experience for them, andd when they do reemerge, it will be with the strongest work they've produced since Gemini. (Honorable mention to My Little Pony, since the damn hiatus has lasted FOR FREAKING EVER.)

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?

Ghaa, I see so many pretty bands on Tumblr that I'm curious about (especially in the Lycaon tag, since those boys pose with other bands a LOT). I don't want to get hooked on too many, though - that way lies fiancial ruin. (Bad enough I spent a small mint in Japan catching up with back SCREW and D=OUT singles . . .)

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?

GazettE finally releasing new music - Ruki has alluded to an album in the words a few times. Also Lycaon's new album in February, SCREW's two mini-albums, the return of Alice Nine (hopefully), Season 5 of My Little Pony (FINALLY), GazettE's three DVD live set . . . and maybe, just maybe, a band I love coming to a location where I can realistically go see them. Hey, it could happen, right?

I was just about to google one of these. How convenient. XD

Another Lycaon discoverer. They were awesome. :) And Maleficent too is worth a mention. :)

Ohh, that book sounds interesting! I did watch the John Carter movie, mostly because it was on Sky every two minutes at one point, and while it didn't exactly set my world on fire, it wasn't as offensively bad as the reviews made it out to be. Such a shame, as my Dad is a big fan of the book series. I would love to know how they managed to mess the promo up that badly!
