Year-End Writer's Meme 2014!

As promised, here's my 2014: The Year In Review Writer's Meme! Writers, feel free to use it!

Total Number of Completed Stories: 30
Overall Thoughts:
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: A bit less – I usually write around 40. There were some factors in why I wrote less, though – an awful lot of those fics were in The Camera Eye series, where the stories tend to be longer and more plot-heavy (despite being set in the porn industry)! Plus, I went to Japan in October, and there was some real-world stuff (mostly involving mold removal and reconstructing the resulting damage) that got in the way of writing as well.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?: Pairing I never thought I’d write? Definitely Nao/Saga. It came up in a gift exchange, and I’d never even considered it. As it turned out, it was a lot easier to write than I’d thought once I had a central concept. Fandom I thought I’d never write? Given that I had barely heard of Lycaon at the beginning of the year (just as one of those hoardes of younger, non-PSC bands out there, and up until now, I’ve been PSC-centric), I would definitely never have predicted Yuuki would be showing up in one of my fics before the year was out!
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?: Probably The Camera Eye: Dirty Soap. It wasn’t the most popular entry in the series, but it was a lot of fun to write, because it took a real-life incident from the porn industry of the early ‘70s (the Marilyn Chambers Ivory Snow scandal) and transported it to the modern world – in a very different media climate and very different porn industry. So it was a challenge on a few fronts.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?: For me, writing a story without sex is a risk! And that’s what the Saga/Nao story was. I learned from this story that there’s definitely some fics where “cute” is the way to go, and going “hot” would actually not be appropriate.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?: Yes – I actually have a couple of story ideas in development, one of which is a crossover with a fictional media property. (Not an adaptation - a true crossover, with J-rockers coexisting with the ficitonal world). If that happens, it’s going to be a definite challenge!
From my past year of writing, what was...

My best story of this year: The Camera Eye: Rose Tint My World. I’m really proud of that one – it represented an evolution in the series, because Uruha, who had been the in-control director/producer until then, was suddenly thrust into a situation where he was vulnerable and had to do something drastic. I also like how Kai and Uruha’s relationship came out in that one.
My most popular story of this year: Going solely on the number of LJ comments, The Camera Eye: Reality Bites.
Most fun story to write: Other than Dirty Soap mentioned above, I’d say The Camera Eye: Reality Bites and its PWP sequel, From Fantasy to Reality. It brought in new characters (Kouki and Ryoga) and also involved the existing cast – I especially had fun with the “winner reveal” scene at the end.
Story with the single sexiest moment: Kind of hard to pick out when you did a whole bunch of stories set in the adult video industry! I’d have to say the scene between Byou, Jin and Kazuki in The Camera Eye: Fledgling’s Flight.
Story with the single funniest moment: The Camera Eye: Trophy Boys. Aoi's reaction to the furor over Ruki losing the “best oral” award to a Russian porn star (inspired by Yuna Kim’s controversial loss at the Olympics).
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: The Camera Eye: Fledgling’s Flight represented a big shift in Aoi and Kazuki’s relationship. It basically came about after I went to three SCREW lives (and handshake events afterward) when I was in Japan. I noticed that Kazuki was actually a very different person when he was with his bandmates than he was when he was with Aoi, where he was very much the eager-to-please kohai. I wanted to do a fic that played on that contrast – and also put A and K’s relationship on a bit healthier ground. (And, yes, I realize I kind of committed a continuity blunder with that one – I had forgotten that Kazuki and Aoi had shared an experience with Byou before, albeit on-camera – though Kazuki’s night with Byou and Jin was still the first time he’d done something like that without Aoi).
Hardest story to write: Destiny, Schmestiny, the aforementioned Nao/Saga – or at least it was hard in the planning/developing stages. It got easier to write once it got rolling.Biggest Disappointment: The fact that LJ continues to shrink as a platform for fanfiction, when it used to be the best, easiest and fastest way to get a story out. I use AO3 (and get a lot of “kudos” notices from them, so I know at least people are finding the stories), and I promote my stuff via Tumblr, but I do miss LJ as the be-all and end-all of J-rock fanfic.
Biggest Surprise: The Byou/Jin pairing! It came out of nowhere when I was writing The Camera Eye: What Friends Are For, which was supposed to be a friends-with-benefits fic – before I knew it, Byou was telling Jin, “You’re in my heart” and they were a full-blown couple. But now that it’s A Thing, it’s here to stay, because dammit, it works and they're hot together - hence the icon for this post! Expect to see more of the pairing in 2015! (Expect to see Yuuki, too!)

Ahhh. It's lovely to see things from the authors perspective :) I loved that soap chapter too though my favourite I think is the one where Kazuki gets some independence.
