It. Is. FINALLY. Done.

My fic for the uruai summer challenge is posted. (Well, at least I tried to post it. It went on my own journal okay, but I'm getting moderation submission messages for communities that usually aren't moderated, like uruai itself). It's the third time I've desecrated a Disney film - this one has its roots in The Little Mermaid, while I'd done fics based on Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland (co-written with aleksiina_26) before. It's also the longest J-rock fic I've ever written - 18k words plus.

I learned a lot of interesting things about The Little Mermaid (original story and film) while doing background research for the fic:

1. Walt Disney himself had come up with a version of Little Mermaid that was supposed to be used in a Fantasia sequel that was scrapped. When the neo-Disney team was preparing the 1989 film, they found Uncle Walt's treatment and found it to be very close to their own script - which meant they were dong something right!
2. Ursula was originally supposed to be voiced by Bea Arthur, but she had to drop out because she was too busy with Golden Girls.
3. The original story doesn't end with the mermaid dying, as many people think. Instead, she's given a second shot at being human by becoming a "daughter of the air" - a sort of fairy who helps children. If she does enough good deeds, she'll win the human soul she seeks. (The name Ariel might refer to this - the mermaid was nameless in Andersen's original).
4. Ariel was modeled after Alyssa Milano, then on Who's the Boss.
5. Sebastian was originally supposed to be an English butler crab. The songwriters convinced the producers to make him Jamaican instead so they could use calypso music on the soundtrack.
6. Some people think Andersen wrote the story because he was in love with a man he couldn't have, Edvard Collin. It appeared around the time of Collin's engagement to a young woman (remember, in the original story, the mermaid loses the prince when he marries someone else).
7. The original Danish title of the story is Den Lille Havfrue, literally "The Little Sea Lady." In Japanese, it is called Ningyo Hime, or Mermaid Princess. It's been the basis of several anime and manga, including a feature film called Andersen's Mermaid and the series Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch.

Yep, it's amazing what you pick up when you're looking for creative ways to get two gorgeous men in bed together. ~_^

So, yeah, that's done. I still need to do my kai_pleasure challenge fic, finish off my bingo line on Penisy Kinks Bingo, and .  . . well, there's the small matter of a certain kinky bastard who turned up this week in a very ficworthy leather bunny bondage outfit . . .

Ningyo means doll though. 人形 <--- "human, shape"

Ha, not really surprised Wikipedia got the romanization wrong. Doll Princess sounds like it should be another Disney film entirely. XD

Ah but there's a slight difference!

人形 (ningyoo) means doll or puppet, but
人魚 (ningyo) means mermaid or merman...

So it is completely correct. The little mermaid in Japanese is called Ningyo Hime (usually just written as にんぎょ姫) which means the Mermaid Princess ^^;

Mmm, completely random comment from one of your completely random lurkers..

Did you know 9Goats Black Out made a song called Den Lille Havfrue? They used the Danish name because they didn't think the Japanese one fit very well with the song :)

And eh, hi *waves* I am admittedly horrible at leaving comments, mostly because I have somewhat abandoned Livejournal xD Nevertheless I do look in from time to time and read along sometimes.

I didn't know that! Surprised I didn't come across it during the research for the fic. Apparently, the story is very popular in Asia, there's been a number of other anime adaptations and references besides the one I named above (I know Kaleidostar did an episode where the Kaleidostage troupe performs a sort of Cirque du Soleil act based on The Little Mermaid).

I don't really blame you for abandoning LJ. After all the technical problems I had posting this fic, I was ready to abandon it, too! (I did end up opening an account at Archive Of Our Own).

Haha, I bet there are loads of references everywhere. The Japanese are not just crazy about the Little Mermaid, but by H.C. Andersen's stories in general. It is not uncommon for me to be asked or even told various things about his fairy tales by Japanese people once they learn that I am Danish xD

Mmm, it wasn't even so much the technical issues. The jrock community here just isn't what it used to be anymore and I don't really feel the need to share my stories much when there are no one around to leave more.. interesting comments xD So I just hold on to the people I met when the Jrock community here was active, and share my ideas and my writing with them on Google Drive xD Do let us know if you stop posting here though! I am running out of writers I care to read stories from :/
