Okay, just watched the DVD that came with Division. Yes, I braved Derangement. Yikes. Overall, I think the presentation here is brilliant.

I'm going to talk about the two videos individually first and then give you my impression as a whole.

First, Ibitsu. WHOA. SEX, SEX, SEX. Seriously, this may be the most OMG HOT video they've done since Invisible Wall. Beautifully shot. Everyone looks GORGEOUS. And there are a LOT of scenes that a clever screencapper could turn into orgasm face icons. We get a full-blown drumgasm in there, and a lot of quick shots of boys leaning over gasping in ecstasy. OH, YEAH, BABY.

And then, Derangement. Okay, I knew going in to expect something horrible, given the comments I've seen about it. And, yes, it was definitely horror, but it was art-horror - creepy and disturbing in a very artistic way. In a lot of ways, it was reminiscent of the Italian art-horror classic Suspiria (which I watched in the edited-for-Scifi-Channel version years ago, and have no desire to see the uncut version of, thank you very much). Suspiria has a notorious scene involving maggots, and a similar oversaturated color scheme with an emphasis on red. (The film is also quite well-known in Japan - Studio Gonzo was planning an anime version at one point - so it's entirely possible that Ruki, a horror buff, is familiar with it).

But, yeah, pretty damn disturbing. The shots of the boys are pretty, though!

And the overall package? Put them together, with the album art animation between them, and it becomes a union of opposites. Beauty/ugliness. Stark black and white/oversaturated color. Flowers/maggots. Ruki seems to have long been fascinated with dual natures (see Filth in the Beauty), and this is that taken to a higher level. In some ways, it's a much darker version of Alice Nine's Gemini concept - "Absolutely opposed element."

Overall, it's pretty damn brilliant, and very Ruki. (And, yeah, you can't go wrong with all those orgasmic shots in Ibitsu).

Thoughts on the overall album later!

I was listening to Derangement on my way from school today and Division being quite similar, but much darker, to Gemini was all I was thinking the whole time. It's nice to see someone share the same opinion. Because whenever a song/album/band is compared to another, some serious shit gets flipped. So, I just shut my mouth up and stay out of gazedrama.

Oh, it's most definitely a darker take on the same them of duality. I really do think, sometimes, that the two bands inspire and work off each other a LOT. There's been a lot of songs that were similar-themed enough that I've often wondered if one inspired the other - Kiss Twice Kiss Me Deadly/My Devil On The Bed, 13 Stairs/Gallows, etc.

But, yeah, it's definitely something I wouldn't talk about in public on GazettE OR Alice Nine forums, because that way be wank.
