Last night I watched a bunch of Lycaon PVs on YouTube because Yuuki. (Seriously, Japan, you can stop it with the beautiful, life-and-wallet-ruining vocalists now.) I figured that this is a younger, indie, non-PSC-affiliated band with a devoted following on both sides of the Pacific (if the number of reblogs on Tumblr images is any indication) - surely the comments on the videos won't be filled with the same kind of wanking and complaining that plague GazettE/Alice Nine/SCREW/D=OUT PVs, right?

Wrong. Same shit, different band. Seriously, is there a visual kei band in the world that is immune to any of the following?

1. Their old stuff was great - this SUXX!!!
2. They haven't been the same since they went major/changed lineups/went through a band-threatening trauma!
3. The singer's voice SUXX. (The Alice Nine variation adds ". . . since Shou took voice lessons. I miss his old style!")
4. They used to be METAL, they're crappy pop now!
5. They totally ripped off (insert other band's name here - often a Western band).
6. These guys look like total faggots! (From the inevitable homophobic male troll).

I feel almost obligated to leave a positive comment on the video after reading all that. I agree with one poster on Lycaon's Eros video (which, um, lives up to its name), who said, "You people keep saying that visual kei has gotten boring, and then when a band steps a little out of their comfort zone and does something different, you post stuff like this."

In other news, I spent Thanksgiving at my brother's place in Philadelphia, where we did the American ritual of eating turkey, watching football and passing out after dinner (and also watched Frozen somewhere in there, which actually lived up to the hype. Best Disney film since the glory days of Little Mermaid/Beauty and the Beast). We went to a big Christmas display elsewhere in Pennsylvania the next day, then I came home and spent the rest of the weekend grocery shopping, doing laundry and working on the latest installment of Camera Eye. (Trying to figure out how to get a non-PSC-affiliated person into the series - not for this installment, for future ones - without violating my rule that no non-PSC people will work for PSC Productions. Because Yuuki. I don't even have to make him a porn star, he did it himself).

Frozen does not live up to the hype. It was a terrible film. But I'm in the minority for believing this.

As for youtube. It's troll central. No matter what is on there it gets hate.  Or in case of video's like the trailer for star wars episode 7: random racism for no reason.

Good look writing. I'm waiting impatiently.

You dislike Frozen as well? Hooray! It's not the worst film I've ever seen, but I really felt it needed a few more drafts for the story to work. I much preferred Tangled!

I mean, uh, sorry for butting in... -_-;

It's not the worst Disney film even. That honour I give to The Little Mermaid. Not because the film itself is bad, just that by stripping the unhappy ending the story has changed from "Don't change yourself to get a man" to "Change yourself and you get the man of your dreams with just your good lucks alone". It's a terrible message!

But Frozen... It's supposed to be a story about two strong young women.

I see:

1 Princess/Queen scared of her own power and advised (by men) not to use it. Meaning she grows up with out of control powers that she should have learnt to master as a child. Elsa makes mistakes but she has a brain at least.

1 Princess who acts like a child, as an adult. Her heart is in the right place wanting to save her sister. But instead of getting help, or even preparing herself with the right clothing, she storms off and is completely helpless until some random guy agrees to help her.

Never mind the first half hour that felt like it was a Nazi propaganda film. (Anna even specifically states she's looking for a blond man) I think the racism was accidental but there's no need for it in a 21st century film.

And the sound track. To me it's nothing but annoying.

It's a mediocre film at best. I just don't understand the hype at all.

Well, one thing I did like about the film is it pukes rainbow sparkles all over the old-school Disney princess ideal - "You will find your prince and you and he will fall in love with each other at first glance - no messy human interactions necessary! Your prince will come rescue you when you're in danger, he's your whole world, and you'll live happily ever after!" The prince in this film is a jackass. The start of the film looks like we're going to have the stereotypical Cinderella situation - princess meets prince, falls in love, etc. etc. - and then, we (and the characters) find out the truth. Anna ultimately saves both herself and Anna not through her love for a man but her love for her sister. The message I took away from it is "Don't be fooled by the smooth-talking jerk who seems to be in love with you - look deeper before you fall in love. A woman can depend on sisterhood, literal and figurative." And that's a very positive message to give little girls who are going to grow up and encounter crap like Twilight (which pushes the old-school prince thing as a positive).

But then, just my two cents. YMMV. ~_^

Beauty and the Beast told the same story. Gaston was meant to be the Dream man of every girl in town. But Belle, the only girl with brains, saw right through him.

Meeting the Beast... she's terrified of him. Until he's nice to her. Only then does she fall in love and he becomes the dream prince.

Feminists hate Beauty and the Beast, and there may be some Stockholm syndrome there, but it's totally NOT about an abusive relationship. Belle didn't stay out of love, she stayed as his prisoner. His love set her free, her love brought her back.

I get what you're trying to say about Frozen. As a child I would have seen that and loved it. As an adult I see how weak Anna actually is and just how much she depends on EVERYONE around her. Never once does Anna stand on her own two feet.

But enough ranting about Disney films!

I think that's a general survival tip for the internet - never, ever look at Youtube comments! Doesn't matter what it is, people will bitch. Like, I was watching some Let's Plays for a game that had just come out, and the comments were all "Oh, you're playing it wrong, you're not exploring enough, stop being so sucky!" ...because they're perfect the first time they play a game? O_o

Yes, I'm learning my lesson about YouTube comments, all right. Also message boards for TV shows and movies on mainstream entertainment sites. (Somehow, a discussion about Star Wars turns into atheists and hardcore Christians at each other's throats). And that thing about the game video is just ridiculous - what, is the person who posted that some sort of psychic who knows instantly what the developers had in mind? Please.

I think it must be a rule of the universe - if there's a band, there's always going to be people complaining. Even if the band has only existed for three months! ;)

HA, I can just see that. "OMG, they're TEH SUXXORS now! They were so much better three weeks ago! What happened to the METALCORE they were playing at their debut? They're a pop band now!"
