As I said in my last entry, I went to the dentist yesterday because I thought I had broken off a piece of filling. Nothing major, just scary because I hate dentist drills like burning, right? Well, I got there yesterday, and the hygienist looked at the tooth with her little mirror – and she informed me I hadn’t broken the filling, I’d broken off a little piece of the TOOTH! Now, I had NO idea how this happened, because I go out of the way to take care of my teeth. Brush twice a day, rinse with Listerine, eat only sugar-free candies and mints, take calcium supplements, get checkups and cleanings every six months, etc. (Um, this may be slightly related to my terror of drills. Slightly.)

So the dentist comes in, she looks at the X-ray the hygienist took of the tooth and says the break is small enough that she can fix it with a regular filling. And as to how it happened, she asked me if I clench or grind my teeth at all. Which I do – I feel my jaw tense whenever I get stressed. I also have mild TMJ symptoms – snap-crackle-popping sounds in my jaw sometimes. (Which I’d chalked up to arthritis, which I have in several other joints). Verdict: I’ve been grinding my teeth in my sleep. (Well, that explains the normal blood pressure reading from the other day. Apparently, I was subconsciously taking out all the horror of the past year on my own teeth).

She went to start the filling and said, “I’m not going to have to do all that much drilling – just roughen the surface so it’ll take the filling. Do you want to go without Novocain?”

Me: O_____________O

Dentist: Never mind. I saw your face. We’ll give you Novocain.

(I’d like to add that my dentist and her assistants have never been anything but nice, gentle and compassionate with me. My terror of drills actually stems from experiences I had before the age of 5-6 – my very first dentist was a bastard who didn’t believe in Novocain for child fillings. They say that anything that happens with you at that age sticks with you more than anything that happens afterward).

So after she did the filling (which, thank God, really did involve minimal drilling), she took impressions of my teeth to build a mouth guard, which will keep me from doing any further damage in my sleep. I got one of those over-the-counter mouth guards to use until that’s ready (it’ll take about two weeks).

BUT! The good news is, when I got home, look what was waiting for me!

(No, not Kai. I had him already - go here if you want to order a J-rock plushie of your own! But I said when I got him that when I got Fadeless, I'd take a picture of him with the CDs). So, yeah, that just kind of slightly redeemed the day. Slightly.

Ha, I'm not much better. The thing is, before this happened, I had a pretty clean dental record - I had some fillings, but none of them were deep. That's why this freaked me out so much. (Oh, and you should have seen my face when she said, "If this filling didn't work out, the next stage is a cap." Fortunately, she said, "But I'm sure this will be fine, we'll just keep an eye on it" right after that, or I think I would have slid out of the chair and passed out on the floor).

My family has a "bad teeth" curse... On top of that, I don't think I went to the dentist once between the ages of 15 and 30. So for like, a year, I was going every 2-3 weeks... Thankfully, I lucked out and found a dentist that wa super nice and sympathetic to my fears (and outraged when I told her of a dentist leaving his office with blood on my face after an extraction) so it wasn't as traumatic as it could have been.

Ack! And after that extraction incident, I don't blame you for not going back! Sounds like what happened when my wisdom teeth were removed. My dentist at the time - the father of my current dentist - sent me to an oral surgeon, who refused to knock me out completely. He took out three of the teeth, and when he went to take out the fourth, the anesthetic wore off. I screamed, he asked what was wrong, I tried to say the numbness was gone - and he said, "No, you're fine" and cut into my gum again. I screamed loud enough that the doctor must have been afraid that someone was going to call the cops, because THEN he shot me up again. Well, my mother called the regular dentist afterward and read him the riot act, and he never sent another patient to that surgeon again. (If I ever have to have anything really major done again, I'm insisting on total knockout).

The doll was made by one_short_fuse - she's taking commissions for J-rock plushies here:

http://one-short-fuse.livejournal.com/46772.html

She does great work, and the dolls are VERY reasonably priced. I commissioned my Kai from her right after she started taking orders, and now I'm commissioning a Ruki!

Some people are more afraid of the needle than the drill. Guess my dentist thought I was one of them. She guessed incorrectly, in any case. (I swear that if I ever need anything major, I'm going to insist on total knockout - especially considering that the anesthetic wore off in the middle of getting my wisdom teeth removed when I was a teenager. o_O)
